TUNNEL OF…

Today, LAFD and other City personnel are inspecting the tunnels under the Nike Missle site again.

A few weeks ago, the LAFD ventured into the tunnels and found no flooding, whereas in the past flooding had been reported.

The “Giant Voice” system is the new mass notification system of exterior speakers, and is the primary means of communicating with base housing personnel during an event that may require timely action.

Residents in the vicinity near the housing areas may hear the test
announcements and should not be alarmed.

Here’s the inside scoop / summary of accessing underneath the Nike Missle site:

1st step – General meeting at the site with City agencies, including the Fire Department to discuss and formulate a plan. This was done on January 5, 2012.

2nd step – On Wednesday, January 18th, the Fire Department opened the doors to do a thorough inspection, and material sampling. This day was for Fire Department access only. No other persons were allowed to enter the site due to the uncertainties that present themselves, e.g., unsafe conditions, unsafe ventilation, dust, the potential for unknown hazardous materials, the presence of rattle snakes, spiders, scorpions, field rats, etc.

3rd step – Analyze material samples and test for hazardous substances, e.g., asbestos. This step should take about one week, which means the earliest for potential non-Fire Department persons, including City personnel is approximately the week of January 30th.

• The geotechnical firm of Shannon & Wilson has concluded exploratory drilling operations at the Paseo Del Mar landslide site.
• Collected soil samples and data is in the process of being analyzed to further determine the ongoing extent of the landslide.
• Representatives of the Board of Public Works and Bureau Engineering conducted a routine site visit on Thursday January 5, 2012 to further assess area conditions.
• The Bureau of Engineering will continue to post a monthly report on the status of the slide at the following website: http://eng.lacity.org/whitepoint/whitepointlandslide.htm
• Public Affairs Office bullet points will continue bi-monthly as needed.
• City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department closed the walking trail thrOUGH the Nature Preserve during a rain event in December 2011.  The trail was inspected and re-opened immediately after the rain event.
• Residents and visitors are urged to keep out of the closed-off area as it presents an immediate and life-threatening hazard.

According to Molly Markel, Community Manager, the fencing will be 5 feet tall and black to match the color of the existing fence. Tierra Vista will be installing irrigation to grow grass to an area of 50 feet by 100 feet. Another path will be installed, made of crushed rock to mimic the existing landscape. The surrounding landscape, will be left the same – not disturbing the natural look of the area.

The hours of operation for the dog park will be 7 days a week, but only from dawn till dusk to respect neighbor’s privacy – namely on Hamilton and Silvius. Landscapers will be responsible to keep the area aesthetically pleasing as part of their contract.

San Pedro High School new neighborhood campus, the John M. and Muriel Olguin Campus of San Pedro High School will open in August 2012, the Campus will open with 500 students, a combination of Marine Science and Mathematics Magnet students, Police Academy Magnet students, and 40 resident San Pedro High School students that are chosen by lottery.  The state of the art campus will offer students opportunities to pursue their interests in the Marine Sciences and Law Enforcement.

The Palisades Residents Association, in concert with the Pt Fermin Residents Association and Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council provided SPHS and LAUSD a laundry list of questions prior to the well-attended San Pedro Education Summit, created and hosted by Dave Behar, at SPHS. The resident questions are viewable here and the written answers to the master questions have been committed to being provided to the PRA by January 31, 2012 by SPHS and the Magnet team.

To apply, prospective students must fill out a “Choices” application, available on-line at echoices.lausd.net or by picking up a paper application in the Magnet Office at San Pedro High School.  In addition, 40 spots will be available for San Pedro residents who do not wish to be part of the Magnet; but, still would like to focus on the marine sciences or law enforcement at the Olguin Campus.

The berms have been constructed and everything else is done.  The County is hydroseeding the slopes/bluff areas that were disturbed.  The seed mix was provided by the Conservancy so the vegetation will match what is in the Conservancy area once it matures.
