Talking Trash

The Palisades neighborhood has been in the news lately but not necessarily in a good light.

“Dog Droppings Spoil the View” is Anita Mannila’s Letter to the Daily Breeze Editor this past Sunday.

“One of the most beautiful places to walk in San Pedro is along Paseo del Mar from Western Avenue to Point Fermin. A walk along this path is good for the body but not always for the “sole.” One has to be fleet-footed to dodge the landmines left by dogs whose owners don’t clean up after them. Dog walkers: Cleaning up after your pets is a matter of common sense and common courtesy.

Please don’t, don’t, leave the doo-doo.”

And then there is Diana Chapman’s article on page 17 of the August Issue of San Pedro Today where she talks about trash blowing from Point Fermin Park.

“The area becomes a piece of trash – or should I say hundreds of pieces of trash – that stream down from the park into the ocean.”

What can we do about this, neighbors? Schedule a litter pick-up volunteer day? Talk to Parks and Rec about trash cans with lids or more frequent trash pick-ups? Install dog waste bag dispensers? Let the Palisades Residents’ Association know your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. Park and Recs have been asked several times for lids for all the cans on Paseo del Mar…no response. Also, we need doggie waste bag dispensers at White Point Nature Preserve. I have always heard that it is very hard to work with Park and Rec and that getting anything done with them is extremely difficult. I do not know if this is entirely true but my sense is it may be. When are their meetings and are the public invited to participate?

  2. I spoke to some guys from Parks and Rec and they don’t know who is responsible for the little stretch of land to the East of White Point park… where the turnout is in the road. They said it is not their jurisdiction, but have no idea who’s it is… that may be making it a bit tougher to get things done. I think this would be a great spot for dog waste bags… But above all, it is the responsibility of each neighbor and dog walker to be diligent and respectful of the area. Maybe a few friendly signs reminding people to treat the area with courtesy. I meet a lot of passers by that seem to have no understanding of respect for the neighborhood… it is baffling to be honest.

  3. Regarding the dog bags..At the dog park by Knoll Hill dog park folks have attached the plastic bag dispensers from Ikea to the fence or polls and the dog owners fill the dispensers with plastic bags from home. Take issues and find home grown solutions rather then trying to working with the city.

  4. As a dog owner…Even the best well planned outings sometimes produce the need for more than one bag and I have dug in trash cans for anything to serve the purpose of picking up a doo doo for those less enthusiastic or diligent dog walkers I think some sort of bag dispenser no matter how sophisticated would serve a tremendous need and purpose!
